Why Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks the day when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas in 1865.
Today, Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone.
It is a celebration of freedom, perseverance, culture, community, and hope.
It is also a time to reflect on how far we have come and how we can continue creating opportunities for future generations.
What Is the African Diaspora?
The African diaspora refers to people around the world whose families and ancestors trace their roots to Africa.
Today, the African diaspora spans every continent and includes people living throughout North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond.
While every story is unique, many communities throughout the diaspora share common values:
Family
Community
Resilience
Opportunity
Freedom
The players featured in this challenge represent different parts of that global story.
Why Soccer?
Soccer is the world's game.
It is played in neighborhoods, schools, parks, villages, and stadiums across nearly every country on Earth.
The game brings together people from different cultures, backgrounds, languages, and experiences.
Like Juneteenth, soccer reminds us that people thrive when they have the opportunity to participate, contribute, and belong.
That is why we chose soccer as a way to celebrate Juneteenth this year.
Why These Players?
The players featured in our Freedom Through Soccer Challenge were chosen because their stories reflect values that connect deeply with Juneteenth.
Some are children of immigrants.
Some overcame poverty.
Some fled conflict.
Some invested in their communities after finding success.
Some have used their platform to inspire others.
Together, they represent different parts of the African diaspora and remind us that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity is not always equally distributed.
Their stories show what can happen when determination, support, and opportunity come together.

Achraf Hakimi

Achraf Hakimi was raised by working-class immigrant parents who made tremendous sacrifices for their family.
His mother worked as a cleaner and his father worked as a street vendor.
Those sacrifices helped create opportunities that allowed Hakimi to pursue his dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
Today he is one of the world's top defenders and a leader for Morocco.
His story reminds us that dreams often begin with the people who believe in us before anyone else does.

For many of us, Dwight Yorke represents that possibility.
